fix(sync): run each request, reply and clone round in one transaction (#422)

A received delta found wrong when its basis arrives later in the pass fails sync-protocol-01 Section 7.7's commit check, which now rolls back everything the pass stored, as fossil's page_xfer and client_sync transactions do, instead of undoing the delta by hand and keeping the rest. The phantom-fill cascades and the server's closing leaf and tag repair run inside that transaction. Any other card error still commits the prefix before it (Section 10.1); on the client that prefix now includes the reply's buffered igot phantoms and visibility changes.

db.DB.WithBoundTx binds a DB to one write transaction so code written against *DB, nested WithTx included, joins it as savepoints instead of contending for the write lock from a second connection.

SP-7.7-4 is covered; the new SP-10.1-6 has sync.10.1.integrity-error-prefix. Tracked in #418. check-in: c5f5838169 user: [email protected] tags: main, trunk

feat(repo): set the hash policy by name (#408)

artifact-format-01 7.1 (AF-7.1-2) matches policy value strings case-sensitively and exactly and makes an unrecognized value fatal. No surface took a value string, so the row stayed partial.

Repo.SetHashPolicy takes sha1, auto, sha3, sha3-only or shun-sha1, as fossil's hash-policy command does with fossil_strcmp, stores the ordinal, and refuses any other string without touching the stored policy. Auto in a repository that already holds a SHA3 artifact stores sha3 (7.3).

New conformance cases drive every name, wrong-case names, unknown names and the empty name through it, and the AF-7.1-2 scope note is dropped. check-in: feea6a1614 user: [email protected] tags: main, trunk

fix(manifest, hash): verify the R card at commit; reject an unrecognized hash-policy (#396)

* fix(manifest, hash): verify the R card at commit; reject an unrecognized hash-policy

A check-in reads its manifest back and requires the R card to equal the digest recomputed over the resolved tree, byte for byte (artifact-format-01 6.3.4, AF-6.3-5). A hash-policy setting outside the ordinals 0 through 4 is now an error instead of a fall back to the default (7.1, AF-7.1-2).

Tracked in #387.

* fix(manifest, repo): drive the commit R check from conformance; refuse a bad hash-policy on write check-in: c42a2b90c6 user: [email protected] tags: main, trunk

fix: harden sync and repository defaults (security) (#282)

* fix(xfer): reject non-decimal card sizes and bound payload memory

A payload card's size was parsed with strconv.Atoi, so a peer sending `file HASH -1` reached readPayload's negative-size assertion and panicked the client or server decoding the message, and a signed size such as `+5` was accepted. Sizes now go through parseSize, which follows the sync draft's `decimal = 1*DIGIT` grammar and fossil's 32-bit limit and returns a decoding error for anything else. uvfile FLAGS use the same parser, so negative FLAGS are rejected as the draft requires. The assertion stays, now unreachable from peer input.

readPayload no longer allocates the declared size up front: its buffer grows with the bytes read, so a large size over a short message fails after allocating about what was sent.

A cfile payload may inflate only to its USIZE (a margin above it for a delta) and not past its 4-byte size prefix, and all cfile payloads in one message share a MaxCFileInflateBytes (1 GiB) budget, so a few megabytes of zlib cannot inflate to tens of gigabytes.

FuzzDecode exercises the decoder over both framings.

* fix(sync): refuse malformed xrow payloads and cap HTTP reply bodies

An xrow payload or xdelete PKData from a peer was decoded into a map and used as is. JSON null gave a nil map that reached coerceJSONNumbers' assertion, and a primary-key value of the wrong type or a nested value reached normalizeValue's, panicking the client or server. Both directions now decode through decodeRowJSON: one JSON object, nothing after it, and repo.ValidateRow's rules, which require scalar values and primary-key values that PKHash can normalize. A client refuses an xrow for a table it has not registered. Column types match case-insensitively, as table creation accepts them.

Both HTTP transports read replies through xfer.ReadBody, which stops at MaxBodyBytes (MaxDecompressedBytes plus framing headroom) and returns ErrBodyTooLarge, untagged for retry, instead of reading an endless body into memory.

FuzzTableSyncPayload drives the server handler and client over arbitrary payloads.

* fix(sync): check synced-table rows and identifiers before building SQL

repo.UpsertXRow wrote a row's map keys into its INSERT as column names, and the rows of an xrow payload or xdelete PKData come from the peer, so a key such as "val, mtime) VALUES(...) --" chose the statement's columns and values, and a key could select from other tables into a synced one. This held on the server for pushed rows and tombstones, and on the client for a server's rows.

A peer's row must now use exactly the table's declared columns: repo.ValidateRow refuses any other key, which also keeps a peer from setting _owner. UpsertXRow no longer trusts its caller: it reads the table's registered schema and refuses any key it does not declare, apart from _owner on an ownership-mode table. ListXRows, LookupXRowOwner and DeleteXRowByPKHash validate the table name and the column names they interpolate, so no synced-table identifier reaches SQL text unchecked.

* fix(sync): answer reqconfig only with fossil's transferable config

The sync server answered reqconfig NAME with any row of the config table, for any requester, including one with no capabilities, so project-code, server-code and every local setting could be read by anyone who could reach the sync endpoint.

handleReqConfig now follows fossil's page_xfer and configure.c. It answers only a /GROUP name, only for a requester with Read, matches the group by prefix in fossil's table order, and sends only the names fossil transfers in that group, in fossil's encoding. The user and subscriber tables also need Admin, which counts only for a verified login, and the concealed table needs RdAddr. A refused request gets no cards and no error.

The groups, their names and their capability rules live in one place, config_groups.go. A differential test answers the same requests with fossil's own server and with HandleSync on the same repository and requires identical config cards.

* test(sync): keep fossil http from leaving a backoffice process

* fix(sync): check the login nonce against the request body

The server verified a login card's signature over its nonce but never checked that the nonce was the SHA-1 of the request body after the login line, as fossil's check_tail_hash does (draft-fossil-sync-protocol-00 §6.2). A login card captured from one request therefore authenticated any other request body.

The decoder now records, for each login card, the SHA-1 of the decompressed bytes after the card's line, and VerifyLogin refuses a card whose nonce does not match it. A login card that was never decoded has no tail and is refused.

Login handling otherwise follows fossil's page_xfer and check_login: - a refused login ends the exchange with "error login failed" instead of continuing as nobody; - a second login card is refused with "multiple login cards"; - a successful login adds the user's capabilities to nobody's instead of replacing them; - nobody and anonymous log in without a password, and the reserved developer and reader logins and accounts with an empty password cannot be logged into.

Fixes GHSA-2g5p-q5f3-477p.

* fix(repo): seed nobody with fossil's default capabilities

A new repository seeded the nobody user with "cghijknorswy", so every request without a login card could push check-ins and unversioned files, write wiki pages and tickets, and held Setup. Seed the four built-in users `fossil new` creates, with fossil's capabilities: nobody "gjorz", anonymous "hz", developer "ei" and reader "kptw".

Setup and Admin now include check-in, read and clone, as they do in fossil, so the creating user can sync once given a password. A login to an account with no stored password is refused, as fossil's check_login refuses it; the creator starts with none, and the signature would otherwise be the SHA-1 of the nonce alone.

Tests that push without credentials grant nobody push explicitly. Existing repositories keep their stored capabilities.

* test(auth): reserved-login test updates the seeded developer and reader rows

New repositories now seed developer and reader as fossil does, so the test gives the existing rows a password instead of inserting them.

* docs(changelog): group the sync hardening fixes under Security

* test(sync): reqconfig tests sign their logins over the request body

The login nonce now has to cover the request body, so the reqconfig tests build their admin requests with signedRequest instead of a bare login card. check-in: 3a6126c3e9 user: [email protected] tags: trunk

test: route every fossil-binary gate through one REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN helper (#125)

* test: route fossil-binary tests through one REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN helper

REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN=1 turns a missing fossil binary into a test failure instead of an invisible skip, but only internal/manifest honored it. The six other fossil-dependent sites each did their own exec.LookPath + unconditional t.Skip, so on those a run with no fossil was byte-identical to a passing one.

Add testutil.RequireFossilBin, which resolves the binary the same way FossilBinary does (FOSSIL_BIN override, then PATH) and either skips or fails based on REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN. Route testutil.NewTestRepo, both internal/delta CLI round-trips, the four internal/merge validation tests, the internal/xfer sanity check, and the ls-branch-tip repro through it, deleting their bespoke lookup+skip logic. CI already sets REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN=1 on the unit-test steps, so this makes all seven sites fail loud on absence while local runs without fossil stay opt-in.

* test: route every fossil-binary gate through RequireFossilBin

The first pass left six sites still deciding for themselves whether a missing fossil binary is a skip or a failure. Three of them (internal/sync's startFossilServer and its two integration tests, manifest's two rebuild tests, the root TestPhaseB_Integration, and hash's TestSHA1_FossilValidation) skipped unconditionally, so with REQUIRE_FOSSIL_BIN=1 and no fossil on PATH those packages still reported ok -- the exact silent pass the flag exists to prevent. The other three had hand-rolled copies of the flag check, which is the duplication that let the original drift happen.

All of them now call testutil.RequireFossilBin, and HasFossil is gone: it was a second, skip-only way to ask the same question, and it is what produced the sites that ignored the flag.

Also validate the FOSSIL_BIN override with LookPath, so a stale path reports "fossil not found" instead of surfacing later as a raw fork/exec error.

* test: resolve fossil binary via RequireFossilBin at remaining call sites

* fix: correct stale module path missed by rebase auto-merge

Three imports added by earlier commits in this branch predated the rebase target and had no corresponding line on main to conflict against, so git's auto-merge carried the old module path through verbatim. check-in: f804878bd3 user: [email protected] tags: trunk

fix: correct go.mod module path to go-libfossil (#76) (#117)

* fix: correct go.mod module path to go-libfossil (#76)

The module directive still declared github.com/danmestas/libfossil after the repository was renamed to go-libfossil. pkg.go.dev/godoc scraping matches the declared module path against its hosting path, so the stale path broke SDK doc generation.

Rename the module path across all four in-repo modules (root, the two db/driver submodules, observer/otel, and docs/site) and every internal import, plus the release workflow, the doc-generation script, and the docs.

No tag has been published under the go-libfossil path yet, so the cross-module requires cannot resolve from the proxy. Add replace directives pointing the in-repo requires at their local directories so GOWORK=off builds and the CI matrix resolve without a published version. These replaces are ignored by downstream consumers and can be dropped once new-path tags are cut.

* Guard releases against replace directives; regenerate SDK docs

The go-libfossil rename bridges the in-repo modules with `replace` directives. Go refuses a main module that carries them, so a tag cut while they are present breaks `go install .../cmd/libfossil@<tag>` and every `@version` fetch of the driver submodules. Add a Release workflow step that fails the job before anything is published if any tracked go.mod still contains a replace directive, so the bridge is a CI-enforced TODO rather than a silent landmine. The step comment records what unblocks a release: re-tag the submodules with the corrected module paths, bump the root requires, then drop the replace blocks.

Regenerate the SDK reference docs. The previous pass only substituted URLs over the pre-existing generated files, leaving stale signatures (Repo.Timeline was still documented as taking LogOpts rather than TimelineOpts). Note that gomarkdoc must be run outside a git worktree — inside one it silently strips every source link.

Also reword the README rename note, which read as though the import path had not changed, and re-sort the ncruces require block. check-in: 6273a0750d user: [email protected] tags: trunk

feat: CreateOpts.ProjectCode — accept explicit project-code on Create (#31)

* feat: CreateOpts.ProjectCode — accept explicit project-code on Create

Downstream EdgeSync coordinates a shared project-code across sibling Fossil repos created on different machines so its NATS sync subject ("<prefix>.<project-code>.sync") matches across leaves. Today every Create generates a fresh project-code, so commits never propagate.

Add CreateOpts.ProjectCode: empty preserves current behavior; non-empty must be 40-char lowercase hex (^[0-9a-f]{40}$) — the same format generated project-codes use. Validation runs at the top of libfossil.Create before any disk I/O, so invalid input cannot leave a half-written file behind. Server-code stays auto-generated.

Threaded through repo.Create / repo.CreateWithEnv / db.SeedConfig. SeedConfig validates as defense-in-depth (public package, multiple callers possible).

Clone accepting ProjectCode is out of scope; will follow separately if EdgeSync needs it.

* test: round-trip explicit ProjectCode through fossil rebuild

Asserts that vanilla `fossil` (2.28) accepts a Go-side repo created with an explicit ProjectCode, and that `fossil sql` reads back the same value we set. Closes the gap where the existing TestCreate_FossilValidation only covered the generated-project-code path. check-in: 6b66ea6b2d user: [email protected] tags: trunk, v0.6.1

fix: checkpoint WAL on Close so vanilla fossil can read repo (#28)

Closes #27.

libfossil opens repos in WAL journal mode but the Close chain never ran wal_checkpoint, so closed repo files were a 4 KiB stub plus a fat -wal sidecar. Vanilla fossil's validity probe stats the main file before consulting the WAL → repo rejected as "not a valid repository".

- Adds a typed CheckpointMode (Passive / Full / Restart / Truncate) and a Checkpoint(mode) method on the public Repo (mirrored through internal repo and db.DB). CheckpointMode and its constants are re-exported from the package root so callers don't have to import db. - db.DB.Close now runs PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(TRUNCATE) before closing the underlying *sql.DB. Checkpoint errors are joined with the close error via errors.Join so the connection is always closed regardless of checkpoint outcome. - Skips the close-time checkpoint on the WASM/WASI build path where WAL isn't used. check-in: faf57ad9c7 user: [email protected] tags: trunk, v0.6.0

feat: add Repo.UUIDFromRID for public rid->uuid lookup (#25)

Consumers (bones, EdgeSync) currently bypass the methods-only Repo API to convert RIDs to UUIDs by reaching into r.DB() and running raw SQL. The lookup is well-defined and recurs throughout the libfossil internals; expose it as a first-class method.

Add Repo.UUIDFromRID(rid int64) (string, error) backed by a small internal helper Repo.UUIDByRID on internal/repo so the SELECT lives in one place. Missing rids surface ErrArtifactNotFound (wraps sql.ErrNoRows behind a typed sentinel) with the rid in the message.

Initial open source release

libfossil is a pure-Go implementation of the Fossil SCM, reading and writing the same .fossil SQLite repository format as upstream Fossil.

This is the first public release of code that previously lived in a private repository. The module path is github.com/danmestas/libfossil and the binary is named libfossil to avoid $PATH collisions with upstream fossil.

Included: - Repo lifecycle (create, clone), checkout/checkin, timeline, merge, diff, annotate, shun, tag, branch, bisect, stash, undo/redo - Sync-over-HTTP protocol (client and handler) - Two SQLite drivers: modernc (pure Go, default) and ncruces (wasm-capable) - Observer interfaces (SyncObserver, CheckoutObserver) with an optional OpenTelemetry implementation in observer/otel (separate submodule) - Deterministic simulation testing harness with BUGGIFY fault injection - Kong-based embeddable CLI under cli/ and a standalone binary under cmd/libfossil/ check-in: f5744359d3 user: [email protected] tags: trunk
