What this skin is for

This repository exists to produce one thing: a dark skin for Fossil that is as legible as the default skin is in light mode. Think of it as the default skin inverted, not a new design.

What that means in practice:

  • Same layout as the default. Logo, project title with the page name after a slash, the rounded menu band, the horizontal submenu row, the same type sizes. If you know Fossil, nothing moves.
  • Contrast first. Body text, muted text and links all clear WCAG AA against the page by a wide margin. Colours are chosen for reading, not for mood.
  • Every hard-coded light colour handled. Fossil writes a lot of colour straight into its HTML and base stylesheet: the timeline graph, branch tints, diffs, ticket reports and their status key, chat bubbles, forum posts, annotate, pikchr diagrams, error and warning text. The skin covers all of those, so there are no white boxes or black-on-black surprises on any page.
  • Nothing to host. One file, imported with fossil config import. The logo, favicon and the small accessibility script are embedded. The web font is a separate build so it stays opt-in.
  • Fossil's own features, unchanged. The hamburger site map, chat buttons, select controls and the rest keep their behaviour and get restyled only.

What I would like from anyone using it:

  • Pages or elements where contrast is still poor, with the URL or a screenshot.
  • Fossil pages the skin has missed. Admin pages in particular, since fewer people see them.
  • Results on Fossil versions other than 2.28, which is what it is built against.

Bugs and change requests go in tickets; questions and discussion here. The README on the home page has the install steps and both download links.
